L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI
Dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini (Salzburg Festival 2018, Haus für Mozart - in Italian). A co-production of BR/Arte and UNITEL.
The production by the directing duo Leiser and Caurier transposes Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri into the present day and transforms Algiers into a madhouse. In the middle of it all, Cecilia Bartoli as Isabella, the camel lady who plays cat and mouse with Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers. He is thoroughly fed up with his wife and has decided to replace her with exotic charms: an attractive Italian woman is needed. Promptly, his pirates get him the shipwrecked Isabella, who is looking for her lover Lindoro. Does Isabella have a future as the star of Mustafà's harem? But he didn't reckon with the resolute Isabella. The clash of smug machismo and emancipatory insubordination forms the center of this equally fun and madcap plot, presented here in a turbulent, cleverly comic interpretation - with Cecilia Bartoli in top form, who earned hymnal reviews.
