THE MAGIC FLUTE

German opera in two acts by W. A. Mozart (Salzburg Festival 1997, Felsenreitschule - in German). A production of ORF.

In an inhospitable rocky region, the noble prince Tamino faints in the face of a monstrous serpent seeking his life. When he wakes up again, he is confronted with a wondrous fellow in feathers named Papageno, three equally strange ladies, and a grandiosely singing Queen of the Night, who gives him the "Mission Impossible" to rescue her daughter from the clutches of a villain named Sarastro, the head of the Temple of the Sun. This is the beginning of a musical adventure journey, at the end of which the supposed villain Sarastro turns out to be the guardian of reason and humanity. In Achim Freyer's visually powerful production, unlike many other versions, the audience is actually led into a fantastic magical land where a furious battle rages between good and evil.
