DON GIOVANNI
Dramma giocoso in two acts by W. A. Mozart (Salzburg Festival 2021, Großes Festspielhaus - in Italian). A co-production of ORF, ZDF/ARTE, NHK and UNITEL.Don Giovanni - like the other two works in Mozart's Da Ponte cycle and Jedermann - is a central part of the Salzburg Festival's DNA. in 1922, Don Juan (then in German) was the first opera ever to appear on the Salzburg Festival program: a performance by the Vienna State Opera conducted by Richard Strauss.
in 2021, we can expect a new reading of this masterpiece, which has always provoked new interpretations: director Romeo Castellucci and conductor Teodor Currentzis challenge a new way of seeing and hearing the "opera of all operas". For her, approaching Don Giovanni means confronting the ambiguity and complexity, as well as the inner imbalance, that Mozart gives to the protagonist of his opera. Vitality and destruction: in this ambivalence they see the fascination of the figure. They try to capture the protagonists around Don Giovanni in their sharply contrasting characters and musical physiognomies as well as their respective relationship to the title hero, without denying the comic element of the "dramma giocoso".
