L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA

Opera musicale in a prologue and three acts by Claudio Monte- verdi (Salzburg Festival 2018, House for Mozart - in Italian). A co-production of CLC Productions/Tangaro and UNITEL in collaboration with medici.tv and Harmonia Mundi.

Shortly before his death, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed one of the most remarkable operas of all time with the love story L'incoronazione di Poppea. For the first time, the plot of an opera was not based on myths or legends, as was common in the Renaissance, but on historical events. Poppea strives for the throne of the empire in ancient Rome through her marriage to Nero, and for this she goes over dead bodies. Monteverdi shows the triumph of a society that does not care about morality, punishes virtue and rewards greed. In Lauwers' interpretation, the gods atone for their guilt as cripples, and the actors literally walk over the corpses of their sins, actions, and acts of murder. Greed for power, intrigue, cruelty, brutality and manipulation triumph against the background of baroque beauty.
