EUGEN ONEGIN
Lyric Scenes in Three Acts by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Salzburg Festival 2007, Großes Festspielhaus - in Russian). A production of ORF and UNITEL.The opera tells the story of two outsiders: Onegin, a young Petersburg dandy, has savored all the pleasures of big-city life after a brief playboy career and feels only weariness. An inheritance makes him an estate owner. In the countryside, through the mediation of his neighbor Lenski, who is also still young, he meets Tatjana, who flees from the narrowness of her provincial world into the fantasy world of the novel. Onegin coolly rejects Tatyana's love. After Onegin shoots Lensky, who is engaged to Tatyana's sister Olga, in a duel, he travels aimlessly through the world. After three years he meets Tatyana again at the side of a highly honored general. He realizes that he has missed the happiness of his life.
