KÁŤA KABANOVÁ

An opera by Leoš Janáček (Salzburg Festival 2022, Felsenreitschule - in Czech). A co-production of ORF, 3sat and UNITEL.

A young woman in an atmosphere of repression and torpor: since her marriage to Tikhon, Káťa has lived in a claustrophobic environment defined by her despotic mother-in-law Kabanicha and the confines of the small-town milieu. When she embarks on an affair with Boris, needs erupt that go far beyond a longing for fulfilled love. To live, Káťa now seems more impossible than ever.

Leoš Janáček devoted himself to the protagonist of his opera Káťa Kabanová (1921) with the fine sensorium he brought to all his great female characters. His unmistakable musico-dramatic language conveys characters, psychology and atmosphere in the most concentrated form, and in its naked directness and power it gets directly under the skin.
