IL TRITTICO
An opera cycle by Giacomo Puccini (Salzburg Festival 2022, Großes Festspielhaus - in Italian). A co-production of ORF, ZDF/ARTE, NHK and UNITEL.
Puccini's Il trittico consists of three one-act operas, each portraying individual fates from a world that seems to hold little hope. In Gianni Schicchi, we meet a kinship that asks the wily Gianni Schicchi for help with a will fraud and gets bounced themselves.
Il tabarro, set against the backdrop of a dreary Parisian dockside milieu, tells the story of young Giorgetta, who throws herself from her oppressive marriage to Michele into a hopeless affair; and Suor Angelica takes us to a joyless nunnery where Angelica is forced to atone for the illegitimate birth of her son. Puccini's composition already points ahead to modernity and gives each of his three one-act operas an individual musical character.
