The Future of Energy

June 27, 2019, Siemens City Vienna
The Future of Energy 2019

Into the future with the motto "Connecting an all-electric world"

Our energy systems are undergoing a radical transformation. Structures, roles and competences are being reassigned, and connectivity is increasing. Decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization are the primary drivers in this context. Furthermore, electricity as an energy source is gaining major importance across all fields. The energy system of the 21st century merges different energy sectors into a “connected” system. This change comes with many challenges, but also an abundance of exciting opportunities. True to the motto “Connecting an all-electric world” we showcased trendsetting technologies and solutions for your market success.

Thank you for your interest. We look forward to seizing these opportunities together!

Digital load management for transformers

Speaker
Sebastian Loziczky, Senior Software Engineer
Peter Reichel, Head of Department Substations, Austrian Power Grid AG

Topic

- The massive increase of renewable energies as the base for achieving the climate goals and the current integration of existing renewables in the transmission grid of APG, the loading situation gets more and more volatile. Therefore, expanding the grid to secure a powerful transmission grid is key.
- At the same time APG, the transmission system operator of the Austrian power grid, is challenged to optimize existing assets more extensively and to utilize equipment more efficiently. For this reason, APG started the Thermal Rating project several years ago.
- In the first stage this ensures that the loading of selected lines can be chosen depending on climatic conditions.
- The next step is a predictive, digital load management for transformers.

Improvement of grid utilization, resiliency and stability of the grid operator by means of phase shifting transformers

Speaker
David Böhm, Grid Management / Network Planning, Austrian Power Grid AG
Martin Stoessl, Head of Global Technology Center for Large Power Transformers

Topic

Due to its central position in Middle Europe the grid of APG is exposed to several externalities. Trans European flows and the interaction of renewables with pump-storage power plants in the alps can lead to a high loaded grid. Phase shifting transformers (PST) are used in several spots to work against these externalities and to optimize the flows in such situations. This presentation shall give an overview of different use cases and the used PST types.

The role of smart infrastructures in future energy systems

Speaker
Michael Weinhold, Head of Technology & Innovation, Smart Infrastructure

Topic

The energy system of the future must be economical, secure and, above all, environmentally compatible. Electric energy will play THE key role in such a system: more and more “green” electricity generated from renewable sources now flows into the grid, demanding greater agility and flexibility from the consumer side. As a consequence, the once one-dimensional and linear power supply system is transforming into a smart infrastructure that requires a highly intelligent system of control across sector boundaries. This transformation is being made possible by core technologies such as power electronics, energy storage systems and, of course, digitalization in the areas of sensor technology, connectivity and data analysis.

Guest lecture: Project Blockchain Grid:  How a citizen energy community in southwestern Styria is optimizing local electricity generation and utilization with the aid of the grid operator

Speaker
Franz Strempfl, Managing Director Energienetze Steiermark GmbH

Topic
The town of Heimschuh in the south of Styria has been the venue for an extraordinary project since autumn 2017. A central communal storage for photovoltaic electricity is utilized here under the name “LEAFS”. Nine households feed their generated solar electricity into it and retrieve it, whenever required. This green “power bank” increases the degree of utilization from 30 to more than 70 percent and leads to a dramatic reduction of the electricity costs. Furthermore, the local grid is simultaneously unburdened. The next step entails the households exchanging the electricity, harnessed from the power of the sun, amongst each other in the course of a “citizens energy community (CEC)”. This will be enabled by means of Blockchain technology. The experiment has a planned duration of two years, with up to 20 households participating.
