Siemens is helping Museums Victoria’s progress towards a brighter and more sustainable future as the state-owned cultural institution begins installing what’s set to become the biggest solar array in metropolitan Melbourne at Melbourne Museum.
The project which kicked off on Sunday 18th November saw helicopters install 1,350 solar panels from the grounds of Carlton Gardens precinct to the roof of Melbourne Museum – the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere. The process was the start of installing 2,700 solar panels across four of Museums Victoria’s iconic sites.
Once complete, this will help cut the organisation’s emissions by 35%, saving 4,590 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year – the equivalent of 983 cars worth of emissions a year.
The installation is part of a broader partnership between Siemens and Museums Victoria which has already seen new LED lighting, chillers and water systems and building management systems installed at their iconic locations.
Museums Victoria is the largest public museum organization in Australia and attracts approximately 2.5 million visitors each year across landmark buildings including Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks, Immigration Museum, and the Royal Exhibition Building, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1880.
