Boosting the economy with reliable energy The National System Operator (ONS) was faced with an imperative need: increasing the degree of the Brazilian electricity system security, to keep up with the pace of economic growth and to avoid supply failures. The challenges were many: the continental dimensions of Brazil, the variations in consumption from one region to another, and the distance from the major urban centers of the main generating poles.

Minor Risks, Improved Management

The way to meet the challenge was the creation of the Energy Management Network (REGER). The concept behind the Reger project is a unified, modern and dynamic platform, structured on a large computer system that integrates the four regional operation centers and the national ONS center, allowing the increase of management efficiency and greater system security . The unified platform enables the operator to "see", in real time, the dynamics of consumption, adjusting the generation and the transmission for the safe supply of energy.

REGER's computational architecture, which promotes the improved integration of the performance of various control centers, represents an important quality leap in the operation of transmission and power generation systems, mitigating the risk of interruption in the power supply, bringing more reliability and Making it a model of operation for the world.

But there is another benefit as important as reducing the risks of supply disruptions: integrating the national center and the four ONS regional operation centers, Reger system provides comprehensive data sharing and redundancy, ensuring continuous supervisory and control capabilities. And this condition is ensured even in extreme situations, such as the loss of an operations center. In practice, this allows more agile decision making, greater reliability and reduced risk of shortages in the transmission system.

A further step in this scenario is the implementation of energy efficiency projects, optimizing available resources (generation sources, transmission lines and distribution systems, for example).

Set up in a consortium formed by Siemens and Cepel (Centro de Pesquisa de Energia Elétrica), Reger, in full operation since 2013, has as its main components the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) platform containing EMS (Energy Management System) For real-time grid analysis and the innovative "Evergreen" concept that keeps the system up to date with the latest technology.

Through the analysis of data of the meteorological forecast, the new tools of the National Interconnected System are able to predict climate changes that could harm supply, indicating mitigation actions.
