"New Data Center Hub – design thinking speeds up the innovation process.""New ways of thinking lead to new ways of working. Data Center Hub proves the power of design thinking. This cloud-based application was created by our software engineers in close collaboration with customers from different countries. Usability and user experience workshops, bi-weekly calls, and on-site meetings involving all parties speed up our innovation process and generate win-win situations for all stakeholders."
Data Center Hub wasn’t just a project in the traditional sense: it was rather a mindset and a new approach to working closely with real future end users. "The only way for me to build this application was to involve customers right from day one, from the moment when we had nothing more than a drawing on a piece of paper," explains Irina Koitz. "The idea of co-creating a product together with customers was rooted in my study years in Helsinki, where design thinking wasn’t just a theory but a way of working," she adds.

The goal was to build an application that truly addresses our customers’ key "pain points" by working out the new functionalities together. "From an initial larger qualitative study involving data center customers from all over the world, we recruited co-creation customers to collaborate closely with us over the span of a year," explains Irina Koitz. These co-creation partners participated in usability and user experience workshops, bi-weekly calls with her and the software engineers, on-site meetings and even discussions on the business model itself. They were always the first to try out the newest functionalities and provided continuous feedback and new further ideas.
This was highly valuable in particular for our software engineers, who had ongoing contact with real end users every week – to answer their questions directly and discuss new ideas. "Overall, it was a really exciting experience and we are planning to apply the co-creation framework to developing also the next flavors of the Hub, e.g., the Lab Hub, which will serve laboratories and clean rooms," raves Irina Koitz.
In the right place at the right time
Irina Koitz joined Siemens in 2016 after finishing her PhD in computer science in Zurich with a focus on incorporating the right features into public cloud services. Her solution was exclusively data-driven, and during this time she developed both her passion for and skills in using data to build the right products. "It was the driver for me to start looking for a role in product management that relies on the power of data. Siemens had exactly such an opening at that time and it was simply a perfect match!"
In 2019, she decided to take a new career challenge and is now the Data Science Strategy Manager at Siemens Smart Infrastructure in Zug.
I have truly been the CEO of my product – but not in a small start-up. On the contrary, I have had at my disposal the complex and beautiful environment and resources of a global player like Siemens.Dr. Irina Koitz, Data Science Strategy Manager at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, Zug
Irina Koitz loves challenging the established ways of doing things where she sees potential for improvement or for implementing new ideas. "I have truly been the CEO of my product – but not in a small start-up. On the contrary, I have had at my disposal the complex and beautiful environment and resources of a global player like Siemens."
For her, the path is clear: start with a single idea – a drawing on a piece of paper. Turn this into data-driven products that launch globally, and do so together with an extraordinary global team spanning multiple time zones and comprising more than 12 different nationalities – to shape the future!
New Data Center Hub is implemented
Two of our customers working closely with us already use Data Center Hub for their daily operations – IP Only, Sweden and GIA Informatik, Switzerland.
For both sites, Data Center Hub:
- is available both onsite and remotely, on any device (mobile, PC, laptop)
- ingests, monitors and performs analytics on BACNet, SNMP and ModBus data
- provides automated, easy to tailor reports for all data ingested, for all user roles
- allows its users to always be aware of everything happening onsite through live notifications (e-mail, SMS)
- provides live and historical data monitoring
- maps data points to floor plans, including heatmaps
