Protection from medial impact (aggressive chemical, biological and mechanically active gases and salt mist) and condensation
High reliability across an extended temperature range in the start-up phase as well as during operation
Saving costs, since no additional heating or cooling is required
High productivity and investment protection through minimal downtimes and performance losses
Altitude up to 5000 meter
Besides the characteristics of the Basic Controller with integrated and decentral IO’s, PROFINET interface for programming and HMI connections, the SIPLUS extreme S7-1200 can provide following advantages for three different variants:
- Variant 1: conformal coating version for use in corrosive surroundings
- Variant 2: additional enlarged negative temperature range up to -40 °C (in operation)
- Variant 3: additional through the equipment of the self-service mounting slots with a cooling element for the extended use up to +70°C
Expanding the CPUs by using additional I/O
The central processing units of the SIMATIC S7-1200 are designed as Compact CPUs with integrated I/Os. Their modular design can be used to increase the configuration limits or to adapt the controller to new tasks: through mounting a Signal Board on the CPU or adding separate signal modules.
Signal modules can be connected to the right of the CPU to further extend the digital or analog IO capacity. CPU 1212C accepts up to two, CPU 1214C, CPU 1215C and CPU 1217C both accept up to eight signal modules.
Signal boards can be added to the CPU to increase the number of digital or analog inputs and outputs, RS485 communication, and battery board to the controller for your application requirements without increasing the controller's footprint.
Signal Boards
Signal boards are connected directly to the front of the CPU. They can be used where space is limited or if only a few additional inputs/outputs are required.
Each S7-1200 CPU can be modularly expanded by a signal board.
This does not increase the mounting space required for the controller.
The portfolio includes digital inputs, digital outputs, mixed digital IOs, analog inputs and analog outputs.
Digital IOs
Digital inputs as supplement to the integral IO of the CPUs
The SM 1221 digital input signal modules convert the level of the external digital signals from the process to the internal signal level of the S7-1200.
For flexible adaptation of the controller to the task at hand. This avoids superfluous investment. Modules with 8, 16 and 32 input/output channels are available.
For subsequent extension of the system with additional input. If the task is extended subsequently, the controller can be upgraded with one of these digital modules. Updating of the user program in TIA Portal is extremely simple.
The portfolio comprises 12 different modules.
Analog IO modules
Analog expansion modules provide the option for using further analog inputs/outputs in addition to the existing integral analog inputs/outputs.
Signal modules as separate modules can be used with all SIMATIC S7-1200 CPUs except the CPU 1211C
- The SM 1231 analog input signal modules convert analog signals from the process into digital signals for internal processing by the SIMATIC S7-1200
- The SM 1231 RTD modules enable temperatures to be measured with high precision using resistance-based temperature sensors.
- The SM 1231 thermocouple modules enable temperatures to be measured with high precision using established thermocouples
- The SM 1234 Analog hybrid modules offer analog inputs and outputs on the same module with small footprint.
- The SM1238 Energy Meter module records measured electrical values, such as voltages up to 480 V AC, in a 1 or 3-phase network with a direct connection but without a transformer.
Failsafe digitale module SM1226
The Fail safe signal modules for digital inputs and outputs (DI and DQ) correspond to the standard modules with respect to their size. Their functional safety is certified according to EN 61508.
They are designed for safety-related use up to SIL 3 according to EN 62061 and PL e accordingto ISO 13849.

Communication modules and boards
The integrated PROFINET interface in SIMATIC S7-1200 can be used for programming the CPU and for communication with SIMATIC HMI Basic Panels for visualization, but also for communication with other controllers or IO devices such as drives.
Communication modules increase the communication capabilities of the SIMATIC S7-1200 through additional functions and interfaces. S7-1200 communication modules support serial communication, PROFIBUS, IO-Link , AS-Interface and several mobile standards.
Simple Communication Modules and boards
Serial communication
The RS485 and RS232 communication modules are suitable for serial, character-based point-to-point connections.
The library functions USS Drive Protocol and Modbus RTU Master and Slave Protocol are already included in the SIMATIC STEP 7 basic engineering system.
The CM 1241 communication modules are used for quick, high-performance serial data exchange via point-to-point connection and available for the RS232 or RS422/485 physical transmission properties
The CB 1241 communication board RS 485 can be plugged directly into all SIMATIC S7-1200 CPUs
Integration of identification systems
Using the RF120C communication module all SIMATIC identification systems (RF200/300/600 and optical reader system MV400) can be connected directly to the SIMATIC S7-1200. A reader can be connected to a RF120C via the point-to-point connection. The RF120C also provides a library with application blocks that are very easy to handle. Configuration is carried out via the TIA Portal.
DP Master and DP Slave Modules
The use of the SIMATIC S7-1200 as a master or slave on the proven PROFIBUS field bus facilitates standardized communication from the field level through to the control level. This meets one of the most important requirements in the performance range of compact automation.
For the connection of the S7-1200 to PROFIBUS there are two communication modules (CMs):
- The DP-Master CM 1243-5 enables as many as 32 field devices to be connected as slaves, e.g. ET 200 distributed I/O modules.
- Together with the CM 1242-5, the S7-1200 functions as a DP-Slave and can thus be connected to any DP-Master.
CM 1243 AS-i Master
AS-i is an open, manufacturer-independent bus system that organizes the transmission of digital and analog process and machine signals into the control system. The AS-i Master communication module, as the "heart" of the AS-i Fieldbus can record sensors in the field or control actuators in the field.
The connection of an AS-i network to the SIMATIC S7-1200 is quite simple:
The AS-i Master CM 1243-2 communication module is simply plugged into the CPU and wired to the field. The AS-i Master CM 1243-2 thus connects the lowest field level, such as IO modules, position switches, signaling columns, load feeders and motor starters with the higher-level SIMATIC S7-1200 control system.
For each master, up to 62 AS-Interface slaves can be connected.
All the advantages of the TIA Portal apply, such as the fully graphical parameter assignment and diagnostics of all AS-i stations without additional software.
SM 1278 IO-Link Master
Module for connecting up to 4 IO-Link devices according to IO Link Specification V1.1. The IO-Link parameters are configured using the Port Configuration Tool (PCT), version V3.2 and higher.
The SM 1278 module enables data exchange with up to 4 external IO-Link devices via one 3-wire cable each or four standard actuators/standard sensors. Comprehensive parameterization options make it possible to adapt the controller flexibly to the communication partner. Thanks to the compatibility of IO-Link with standard sensors, commercially available sensors in accordance with IEC 61131 Type 1 can also be operated on the IO-Link master.
Communication modules for remote applications
The telecontrol communication processors offer a range of different possibilities for the implementation of extremely versatile and cost-efficient Telecontrol remote stations (RTUs) based on SIMATIC S7-1200.
TeleControl Basic
TeleControl Basic is based on SIMATIC S7-1200 and secure transmission via mobile radio or the Internet. It is particularly suitable wherever small data quantities have to be transmitted over wireless connections or via the Internet. TeleControl Basic can be used as a low-cost fault signaling system, but thanks to the bidirectional communication facility, it is also suitable for simple telecontrol monitoring and control tasks.
- The GPRS CP 1242-7 enables SMS messaging for event driven fault diagnostics using general packet radio service (GPRS).. Additional full Teleservice functionally can be realized for remote diagnostics, configuration & programming.
- CP 1243-7 LTE is used to connect the S7-1200 to a mobile wireless 4th generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. The increased data rates compared to GPRS and widespread introduction of LTE open up new areas of application.
