Smarter Pumping for Crude Oil Pipelines - Optimizing the performance of pump stations for crude oil pipelines through data analytics
Pumping systems account for almost 20 percent of the world’s energy consumed by electric motors and approximately 25 to 50 percent of the total electric energy usage in certain industrial facilities (source: eere.energy.gov). Among other applications, pumps move crude oil through vast pipeline networks, which in turn play an indispensable role in the transportation of hydrocarbons to key markets. Siemens is developing an approach that leverages data analytics to optimize the performance of pump stations for crude oil pipelines; more specifically, the application enables automatic detection of product batch changes, yielding reduced pressure transients and more consistent flow rates, while maximizing overall efficiency to reduce energy consumption. Through an annual, collaborative program with Penn State University (PSU), known as the Capstone Design Project, Siemens enlisted the assistance of PSU engineering students. The Siemens-PSU team’s ‘Smart Pump’ project won the ‘Best Project’ award in the fall of 2016, beating 70 other sponsored teams. The Siemens technology showcase will feature an interactive demonstrative of ‘Smart Pump’.
