European pioneers in battery production

Valmet Automotive is a versatile service provider in the automotive industry. The company’s EV Systems business line produces batteries for European car manufacturers.

The factories in Salo and Uusikaupunki produce 48 V batteries and high-voltage batteries for cars and mobile machines. In addition, a battery factory will soon be opened in Germany. The growth of the business line, established in 2019, has been extraordinary.

Valmet Automotive was a strong player in the electric car boom during the 2010s, making cars such as Fisker Karma. In the background, there was a strategic plan about the most important things to develop in the future. Already at that point, electric mobility was chosen as the area of focus to invest in, for example in product development and market research.

”At the moment, there is an upturn in electric vehicles and electric mobility. The strategic decisions and the heavy investments made in the battery business over the last couple of years are now giving good results, and we are a sought-after partner”, says Jyrki Nurmi, SVP of the EV Systems business line.

The first mass production factory started operations in Salo in 2019. The customers needed more batteries and, as Finland had optimal conditions, the business was able to expand quickly.

“Our strong points in the competition are excellent competence in production, high quality, speed and flexibility. We have been able to transfer the know-how gained from the car business directly into the battery business”, Nurmi explains.

Valmet Automotive co-operates with Siemens in its battery factories and this co-operation extends through the whole process. The integration between the software, operating and safety technology has made the commissioning of the lines easier. If problems arise, it is sufficient to dial one number only for support.

“Siemens co-operates with software partners and a network of OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) as a technology and application supplier in product management, production automation and control as well as support for production maintenance”, explains Pekka Pyhäluoto, Global Account Manager at Siemens.

“We have been working together with Siemens for decades and their know-how, especially in production automation, is very valuable to us”, says Nurmi.

“For us, the necessary and important automation system represents the core of our activity. If it doesn’t work, practically nothing works”, Nurmi continues.

Siemens has delivered business-critical control systems for the production lines of the factories. The production control is implemented through a SCADA system which shows the phases of the production, whether there are problems and how the process is working.

“In the battery section, we have intensive co-operation especially regarding the control system of the production line. They have really helped us to reach the next level”.

“The co-operation with Siemens has worked smoothly and even the challenging schedules have been followed. We feel that Siemens is a reliable partner to us with whom we can face the future with peace of mind”, Nurmi says.

The impact of the factories on employment is notable both in Salo and in Uusikaupunki.

“Our strong growth is partly based on the commitment of our staff. We have a team with an entrepreneurial spirit and a will to succeed”, Nurmi explains.

Sustainable development and related matters have great meaning for the whole company. They have been considered on a large scale at the strategic level, too. The factories in Uusikaupunki and Salo have ambitious plans for carbon neutrality in 2022.

The recycling of batteries is handled in co-operation with Fortum so that 95% of the company’s battery materials can already be recycled today. There is a plan to continuously improve the recycling process and the co-operation related to it.

“Valmet Automotive is a true green company. We do things in a responsible manner, and in our business culture we believe that everybody should be treated equally”, Nurmi summarizes.

There is great confidence in the future in Uusikaupunki and Salo.

”The future looks good. We have started early and we have the opportunity to become an important player in this field. We continuously discuss new customers and expand our activities.”

In addition to the automotive business, we are very active also in other fields of industry. We produce batteries for earthmoving equipment, for example.

“We are now able to offer our customers production of batteries and vehicles under the same roof. In addition to the automotive business, we are very active also in other fields of industry. We produce batteries for earthmoving equipment, for example”, Nurmi says.
