Innovative technology for charging stationsIt all started with their own car: About ten years ago, the first electric vehicle was parked in front of the land owned by the Köstenberger family on which the home and offices of the family-owned business are located. Günter Köstenberger jun. developed the first concepts of innovative charging technology back then; but due to his busy schedule these remained largely concepts. It was only at the request of a business partner that implementation was finally started.
Enthusiasts for electromobility
Since then, the picturesque village of Ebreichsdorf south of Vienna has grown into a hotspot of electromobility: Here, the technology pioneers of the Kostad Steuerungsbau GmbH are working on the charging infrastructure of the future. For some years the company has been developing and building a crucial part of electromobility: innovative charging stations. "The range of electric cars has multiplied in recent years so that these cars are now also becoming more popular outside of urban areas. But electric cars will not become fully suitable for daily life until a sufficiently dense and efficient charging infrastructure is in place – a lot of money will be invested in this area in the years to come. We have developed our stations so that drivers can charge their vehicles quickly, conveniently, and safely – as well as in public spaces," explains Günter Köstenberger jun.
Hotspot of electromobilityGünter Köstenberger jun. is used to the curious glances from people walking by the house and company premises of the family in Ebreichsdorf, and he is excited when they stop to admire the electric cars of the Kostad Steuerungsbau GmbH – "I like it when people ask me about our electric cars. Just a few years ago, electromobility was still a rather obscure topic. Today, more and more people are interested in these cars and the technology behind them. Electromobility will radically change the way in which we use cars."
The new generation of charging technology
The Triberium Fast Charger was specifically developed for heavily frequented locations and main traffic routes where vehicles must be charged quickly. Users identify themselves at the station over RFID, and the standard 9" touch screen guides users through the clearly structured menu and explains the steps necessary for starting the charging process.
Thanks to a charging capacity of 50 to 150 kW, the battery can be quickly charged up to 80% in only 20 minutes. The station supports the three most common charging standards in Europe of type 2 (AC), CHAdeMO (DC) as well as CCS (DC), whereby a DC and AC charging process can run at the same time. The station currently communicates over the OpenChargePoint 1.5 protocol, but an upgrade to OCPP 2.0 is possible at any time.

Rugged, reliable technology that is available for many years
For automation, Kostad has decided to work with Siemens products which the company has been using successfully in all areas for many years. The controller is a SIMATIC ET 200 SP Open Controller that includes an industrial controller as well as a PC. This means Kostad can ensure that the charging process is always the same with reliable control. At the same time the company can implement Windows applications on the controller - for invoicing and billing the operator, for example. The alternating current from the power supply grid is converted into direct current in the station and adapted to the battery voltage via the SINAMICS DCP DC-DC converter.
High-quality components, innovative designIt took Kostad only one and a half years to develop its innovative charging station to market maturity. Working with Siemens in Vienna, the company relied on a partner that not only offered high-quality products but also the necessary know-how for the project. The result speaks for itself: There is probably no other charging station on the market that is as good or as innovative.
Technology that inspires
Günter Köstenberger jun. wants to bring electromobility closer to people, and the charging stations developed by his company are a small but important building block in this endeavor: "It is important that electric cars not only feel good when you are driving them. Charging them must also be quick and easy – similar to a car with combustion engine. That is why our stations have an attractive design and good lighting – plus we want to be ready for new requirements such as the new charging standard that is currently being written. The automation and electronics technology used in our systems gives us enough reserves for years to come, but the technology will certainly continue to change. And we want to be right there when it happens!"
