Industrial-grade M2M communication with 5G

It’s now possible to transmit data in real time for industrial applications with assets that are constantly on the move or difficult to access via PROFINET over 5G networks – with the VXLAN (virtual extensible LAN) transmission technology in SCALANCE 5G routers. The PROFINET IO protocol, which is transmitted in Layer 2, is embedded into Layer 3 packets thanks to VXLAN, and this allows them to be transmitted across network boundaries. For example: A central controller can now control multiple decentralized I/O modules on mobile devices, including automated guided vehicles (AGVs), saving costs and reducing maintenance.

In industry, in addition to the need for local wireless connectivity, there is an increasing need for remote access to remote machinery and equipment. In these cases, communication needs to bridge large distances.
