SCALANCE X-500 switches are modular, industrial, high-performance layer 3 switches appropriate for designing electrical and optical line, ring, and star structures with transmission rates of up to 10 Gbit/s and installation in 19-inch control cabinets. With SCALANCE X-500, you enjoy freedom of choice when it comes to connecting media, and you can employ a variety of redundancy concepts.

Typical uses

SCALANCE X-500 is perfectly suited for industrial networks and particularly for integrating them into an existing enterprise network. These layer 3 switches enable the connection of plant parts and distributed field devices from the control to the management level, ensuring high plant availability with extensive diagnostic options and leading transmission rates.

Can a layer 3 switch replace a router?

A layer 3 switch can be used both as a switch and as a router: Layer 3 switches can be configured like a router to support different routing protocols. Thanks to IP routing, you can couple the industrial backbone layer and the enterprise network with each other. With SCALANCE X-500 layer 3 switches, you can also implement layer 3 routing easily and efficiently.

Media modules for SCALANCE X-500 layer 3 switches

Benefit from unlimited flexibility in network expansion: The media modules for SCALANCE X-500 layer 3 switches make it easy to expand networks, such as when later installing additional media modules in free module slots during ongoing operation. The same applies to the subsequent insertion of additional SFP+ or SFP plug-in transceivers in free SFP+ slots.

Plug-in transceivers

Plug-in transceivers allow you to flexibly equip network components in the SCALANCE family with a corresponding SFP slot for optical connections. 

PLUGs for network components

Swap devices easily with no need for specialist knowledge: The C-PLUG, KEY-PLUG, and SCALANCE CLP removable storage media save the configuration data from your SCALANCE devices. Remove PLUG, install replacement device, insert PLUG – and the new device is ready to go! The KEY-PLUGs include all the functions of the C-PLUG and also enable specific functions like layer 3 in the SCALANCE X-500.

Power Supply for SCALANCE X-500 layer 3 switches

The SCALANCE PS598 24 V DC power supply in the IP20 protection class is designed to be installed in 19” control cabinets, or for direct connection to SCALANCE XR-500 layer 3 switches. The power supply is short circuit-proof and resistant to no-load operation, and it can be used worldwide thanks to its wide input voltage range (85 to 264 V AC).
