PROFINET Highlights

Cost savings in engineering can be achieved if certain functions are defined beforehand by a team of specialists in form of standardized communication interfaces. This makes it necessary to have a uniform user view in some situations. You can achieve this goal by defining so-called user profiles (for example, for encoders, drives, scales and dosing, safety-related data transmission, etc.). Profiles define how the application interprets process data in the actual field of application. This provides plant operators and end customers the advantage of replacing individual field devices through the use of user profiles. The use of profiles significantly reduces engineering costs for operators, since the meaning of application-related parameters is exactly defined.

 

iPAR-Server

Static configuration of a field device is performed with defined parameters in a GSD file associated with the field device. A GSD file includes the module parameters for IO modules. These parameters are statically stored and uploaded to an IO device by the IO controller via write sequences when the system is booting. With some field devices, parameter assignment through GSD files is not possible or useful due to the amounts of data, the user guidance or the specific circumstances in an automation system. Such device or plant-specific data are referred to as dynamic parameters. They can often only be assigned during commissioning.

 

iPAR-Server Highlights

When you replace a field device with dynamic parameters, it is preferable to automatically reload these parameters into the new field device on voltage recovery. By using the iPar-Server to save and automatically upload these so-called dynamic devices parameters, the field device manufacturer avoids additional or software logistics costs.

 

Advantages for manufacturers

The device manufacturers does not have to archive and upload system-specific parameters. This takes place automatically.

PROFIdrive field device development

 

The PROFIdrive profile is the application profile for drive engineering based on PROFIBUS and PROFINET. The first profile version was published in 1996. As of 2007, the PROFIdrive profile has been standardized in accordance with the international standard IEC 61800-7. As a vendor-independent drive profile, PROFIdrive profile covers all industrially relevant applications: From simple closed-loop speed control of a standard drive, to drives with technology functions and positioning drives, all the way to isochronous servo applications in machine tool engineering and high-performance, position-synchronous axis grouping operated in complex motion control applications.

 

PROFIdrive Highlights

  • PROFIdrive supports isochronous mode and slave-to-slave communication for high-performance servo applications.

  • PROFIdrive also defines drive-based safety technology for the drive based on PROFIsafe as a safe transmission channel.

  • PROFIdrive is available on PROFIBUS as well as PROFINET. The PROFIdrive application interface is independent of the bus system and existing applications can be migrated without changes from PROFIBUS to PROFINET.

The following tools are available during development of your PROFIdrive field device:

 

  • PROFIBUS PROFIdrive Profile Tester for preliminary certification or testing during development for PROFIBUS drives.

  • PROFINET PROFIdrive Profile Tester for preliminary certification or testing during development for PROFINET drives.

  • The PROFIdrive Profile Tester is PC-based and works completely automatic based on supplied test scripts. This means you can test drives of PROFIdrive application classes 1, 3 and 4.

 

PROFIenergy

 

PROFINET-based data interface for switching off consumers centrally and with full coordination during idle times regardless of the manufacturer or device type.

 

PROFIenergy Highlights

  • PROFIenergy is based on the PROFINET international communication standard and transfers open and standardized commands. This means individual field devices from various manufacturers or even entire sub-areas of a production can participate in energy management.

  • With PROFIenergy, switching functions required for a shutdowns due to work breaks are migrated directly into the field devices and can be addressed by a higher-level controller through a uniform protocol. This saves wiring overhead and also lets operators put consumers that are not required into optimized energy saving modes even for brief work breaks.

  • PROFIenergy also coordinates complex dependencies while the reliability of the plant is always guaranteed. This dynamic energy management is guaranteed by field devices with integrated PROFIenergy functionality.

  • The remaining production is not affected. Other automation components, for example, those for safety-relevant tasks, remain in operation.

Advantages for manufacturers

 

Manufacturers of field devices increase their competitive advantage with the integration of PROFIenergy, because they can offer their customers better environmental performance and cost savings.

  • The PROFIenergy behavior can be individually adapted by the manufacturer to match the specific properties of the field device. For example, the on and off times of an IO module tend to be shorter than those of a drive.

  • The PROFIenergy profile for energy management in production plants was developed with active participation of end users from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) to make sure that they work perfectly in practical applications. 

PROFIsafe Field Device Development

 

PROFIsafe is a globally leading, integrated technology (IEC 61508 compliant) for fail-safe communication in production and process automation. It is a vendor-independent, open standard developed by a global network of experts within the framework of PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). PROFIsafe has been established as an international standard (IEC 61784-3-3) for years and has the greatest range of products and services for safety applications.

 

PROFIsafe Highlights

  • Devices can use PROFIsafe to communicate with safety controllers PROFIBUS or PROFINET so that they can be used in safety-related automation tasks to PL e according to ISO 13849-1 or SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) to IEC 61508.

  • Standard and safety-related communication can be transmitted on the same bus cable with PROFIBUS or PROFINET with PROFIsafe profile.

  • High flexibility when installing or expanding existing installations (retrofit).

  • The PROFIsafe protocol works according to the "Black Channel" principle and is independent of the respective transmission channel (can use copper cable, fiber optics, backplane bus or wireless).

  • PROFIsafe uses proven procedures, such as testing and certification, or the guidelines for installation and thus ensures a high level of availability. Certified PROFIsafe devices therefore simplify the safety-related inspection of equipment

  • PROFIsafe represents an integrated, open solution for safety-related applications for PROFIBUS and PROFINET that meets the familiar user scenarios.

  • Software certified by the German Technical Inspectorate enables simple implementation and cost-effective reproducibility of a PROFIsafe solution.

  • PROFIsafe communication fits in a wide range of different architectures of programmable F controllers.

  • PROFIsafe enables new, innovative device functions, such as fail-safe communication using IWLAN.

Reasons for the certification

Field devices are networked via fieldbusses such as PROFINET in machines and systems. Using certified field devices guarantees interoperability of components from various manufacturers and contributes to a higher system availability as well as time and cost savings for the operator.

To ensure interoperability of PROFINET devices currently available on the market within an automation system, they have to pass the mandatory certification tests. The functionality of a field device is proven by a certification test from ComDeC as accredited test lab and by a corresponding certificate issued by the PROFIBUS User Organization (PI).

 

Device requirements

 

 

The most important requirements from the point of view of plant operators are:

  • Device replacement without a programming device

  • User-friendly plant topology

  • Comprehensive diagnostics concept

  • Isochronous and redundant data transmission

  • Functional safety

 

These listed functions are standardized in the PROFINET standard. It is only a matter of implementing these topics into the field devices and proving conformity to the standard so that they can be used in any automation system with PROFINET.

 

As one of the ten test labs established by the PI world-wide, we offer certification of your devices for compatibility with the standards IEC 61158 and IEC 61784. For PROFINET, certification of all field devices carrying the PROFINET name is mandatory.
