Kent School in ConnecticutFounded in 1906, Kent School is a private, college preparatory school located next to the Housatonic River in northwestern Connecticut. Total enrollment for the co-ed institution is 570, of which 520 live on campus. The grounds of Kent School span 1,200 acres, and comprise 6 dormitories, 10 instructional buildings and a wide range of athletic and recreational facilities, including an equestrian center, a boathouse, and over 10 miles of biking and cross-country trails.
The expansive campus is a challenge when it comes to emergency communication. The school’s administrative and facilities team felt their existing safety and security systems were not effective in alerting students and staff in a comprehensive way that included all school buildings and grounds. “Everybody knows the first three to five minutes are the most important in an emergency,” explains Joe Wolinski, Facilities Director at Kent School. ”When you’re on a campus spread out like this, you have to have a way of communicating.”
The solution provided by Siemens is built on the Desigo CC building management platform, incorporating Desigo Mass Notification directly connected to the fire panel and equipped with integrated intelligent voice communication and individually addressable indoor and outdoor loudspeakers.
The solution features an Easy Button function that enables the safety officer to initiate preset alarms. Desigo Mass Notification leverages the latest communication platforms to ensure emergency notifications reach their intended audience, wherever they are. Acoustic messages go out over loudspeakers, fire safety system alarms and by telephone. The alarms are also displayed on the computers connected to the school’s network. Users must confirm they have read the message before they can continue to use their computer. Siemens also set up a general alarm function for Kent School: It prompts all students, teachers and staff to assemble at defined locations.
