SGW1050 is a highly secure but open and flexible substation gateway for use in a smart distribution grid.
SGW1050 provides the field area network (FAN) or access communication through G3-PLCTM, a highly reliable, high-speed, long-range communication over the existing low voltage power line grid. G3-PLCTM, is designed for interoperability and has been adopted by a broad range of utility companies, semiconductor and equipment manufacturers and system integrators within the smart grid ecosystem.
Typically located in the distribution substation / ring main unit or a busbar trunking switchboard SGW1050 communicates with a series of devices like smart meters / power quality devices or other sensors via G3-PLCTM over any low voltage power line. Backhaul communication towards a metering head end / control center or cloud system like MindSphere can be established using the integrated Ethernet and/or cellular radio interface.

The powerful communication means and Linux-based open platform design of SGW1050 extend its applicability beyond smart metering purposes. The G3-PLCTM interface can not only be used to connect to smart electricity meters but also to communicate via other low voltage power installation like power rails. Hence SGW1050 connects with other devices in the smart grid beyond electricity meters. Most prominent examples are power quality meters, charging station or multifunctional measuring devices in the distribution grid. The Ethernet port allows connection of other smart nodes located at or close to the SGW1050. Intelligent nodes for grid monitoring and grid control located in the distribution substation / ring main unit can thus easily be connected towards distribution SCADA or cloud systems.
