Smart grids use digital energy automation technologies and IoT solutions to intelligently respond and adapt to changes in the grid. Infusing energy intelligence is the key to leverage the data in the grid that allows to make grid operation reliable, cost-efficient, flexible, and safe.

Process bus solutions and benefits. The merging unit records the measured values of the transformers, digitizes them and sends them to one or more protection devices via a sampled measured values (SMV) data stream over fiber optical Ethernet. This digitalization of all analog and digital values close to the process supports offers new, flexible and beneficial solutions for substation automation systems.

This presentation describes how to do real-time monitoring of the electrical power system based on synchrophasor technology using SIPROTEC 5 PMU and SIGUARD PDP, that we call Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMs), and how to take remedial actions to maintain the stability of the power system with Wide Area Protection applications so called WAP.

After a short introduction of the basics of travelling waves, our travelling wave recorder TW800 will be introduced, including background of the design and construction, lab test results and finally the results from a pilot installation on a 500 kV line in Brazil.

What are the benefits of Digital Twins? Testing of the energy automation system can now be done within minutes, without hardware and without additional effort. This leads to faster product approvals, faster system energization, shorter outages, more scalable training and fast fault analysis.

Digitalization offers new ways to take advantage of data often already available in power grid applications, but still unused. Nevertheless, these data are the golden nuggets to improve reliability, availability, and economic operation. Just make them available in the new world such as a cloud and use the available powerful tooling to turn raw data into information. The presentation will show how effortless but secure this can be done. Furthermore, as one example, I will present how service technicians and asset managers are getting comprehensive information to enable a more efficient power grid operation.

With this presentation we explain the benefits of having a completely digital substation, and how we can save costs with the digitization of substations. I will also show the latest available developments that we have in process bus technology.

The increasing digitalization in energy automation systems requires holistic cybersecurity concepts. This conference presentation provides a short overview of the Secure Substation concept. Certain parts, such as Role Based Access Control, Digital Certificates and Security Logging and Monitoring will be explained in more detail.

With Web UI you can get the operational status of your device and can adapt settings to local application with a few clicks – connect your PC or Laptop computer via communication port, either from local or remote. A standard web browser connects you with the device’s web server.  Finally, secure access is insured.

With the advent of digitalization, using the advanced standards such as IEC 61850 which enable faster communication between network devices, new system architectures that support decentralized automation directly in the field or digital twin interfaces that allow remote configuration and testing of protection relays helping industrial customers prepare for the transition to a new energy mix as the network becomes increasingly dynamic.

Beginning with the requirements of owners and operators of industrial power grids, I will then describe conventional ways to meet the functional requirements.  In closing, I will propose a recommended approach of a Siemens solution and the associated benefits.

My conference session gives detailed insights of portfolio elements for Medium and Low Voltage cable grids and overhead line networks. Remote Terminal Units of the SICAM A8000 series and the most relevant extension modules in combination with short circuit indicators like the SICAM FPI  Fault Passage Indicator and SICAM FCM Feeder Condition Monitor downtimes of cable grids can be reduced and network quality can be optimized. Overhead line networks are mainly controlled by Recloser Controllers like the SIPROTEC 7SC80. In case of pure monitoring and detecting short-circuits SICAM FSI Fault Sensor Indicator is already enabled to transmitted states of the grid via SICAM FCG Fault Collector Gateway direct to control center or with the integrated IoT Connectivity to the Cloud.

This presentation explains how to perform the automatic collection of oscillographic records with our SICAM PQS platform and how to make use of the files stored in the application to perform an automatic failure analysis with SAFIR 3.0, which will allow the transmission system operators to have the fault report within minutes.
