High safety for people and systems for reliable operation

The basic objective of IEC 61439 is the safe operation of the switchgear combination under certain operating conditions and under exceptional operating conditions such as the occurrence of overvoltage, overload or short circuit.

 

Nevertheless, high-energy arc faults can be produced in low-voltage switchgear. These unwanted voltage flashovers release high mechanical and thermal forces, making them a danger to people and equipment. In order to avoid these arc faults or to reduce the consequences, appropriate measures must be taken into account.

 

The test of low-voltage switchgear under arc fault conditions is a special test according to DIN EN 61439-2 Supplement 1. It is not mandatory in IEC 61439-1/2, but can be carried out on a voluntary basis either at the discretion of the manufacturer or as the subject of an agreement between manufacturer and user.
