Challenge

The managers at Rexel in the sales and logistics centers identified an approach for boosting efficiency through digitalization. As large building infrastructures, they consume lots of energy. That is why it is all the more important to closely monitor energy flows in buildings, optimize consumption and contribute towards sustainable improvements in energy efficiency. The decision makers also had the objective of implementing a cloud-capable power monitoring solution. In doing so, they are following the guidelines of their parent company, Rexel, to achieve group-wide benchmarking of consumption levels and relevant areas of efficiency potential.

Solution

Rexel opted for the power monitoring system from the SENTRON portfolio from Siemens. The deployment involves more than 100 measuring devices of the 7KM PAC series in SIVACON 8MF1 system cubicles and ALPHA distribution boards, and implement the powermanager power monitoring software on site. In combination, they form an integrated system that has been certified by TÜV Rhineland for conformity to support an energy management system according to ISO 50001. Additionally, a MindSphere implementation is in the works, which connects the facility to the open Internet-of-Things (IoT) operating system by Siemens. They utilize a MindSphere app that was programmed specifically for Rexel Group for energy consumption monitoring and evaluation. It analyzes actual power consumption values and provides insights into possible optimization potential.

Benefits

Beyond the obvious benefits of systematic power monitoring at the logistics center, the move will open up new business opportunities for Rexel. The know-how gained by them by allowing Siemens to optimize their energy consumption will now be used in a new business unit, which will offer consulting services to customers from the industry and retail sector looking to improve their own energy efficiency and the implementation of digital, cloud-based technologies. The power monitoring solution meets the requirements of ISO 50001 certification. Especially for power-intensive companies, this is the key to energy and electricity tax reductions.
