Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program (SMSCP)

The Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program (SMSCP) combines the German dual education system with Siemens’ in-house know-how. It prepares students to work their way into a new system, and by means of the troubleshooting strategies which they learn, they are able to transfer their knowledge and expertise easily to another system. Students with an SMSCP certification are employees who are flexible, autonomous, and professional in his or her dealings with such complex systems.

Holistic approach to mechatronic systems

Our systems approach is the core of the Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program (SMSCP), which has been used with a high degree of effectiveness in training Siemens’ own engineers in Germany. All SMSCP courses are designed to be integrated within a high school, college, or university curriculum, or to be implemented as continuing education.

 

Mechatronics is not only the marriage of electrical, mechanical, and computer technologies; it is also a philosophy for looking at systems. Under the systems approach, students learn about the complexities of the system in a holistic fashion. This allows them to easily transfer their knowledge to other systems, resulting in flexible and autonomous employees.

Course 1 “Digital twins and smart production” introduces students to digitalization and Industrie 4.0. The series comprises planning and implementation of a virtual commissioning, working with manufacturing execution systems (MES), and production tracking and control with RFID.

The key to a job career

Three certification levels built from job profiles

Students can enroll for three different training series and are only awarded certifications for Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant, Associate, or Professional after successfully passing the related examination. Student examinations are administered only by SMSCP partner schools. Each certification is based on a specified, industry-driven job profile which prepares students optimally for their future career in the industry.

Efficient operation of complex mechatronic system

A Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant will function as a well-grounded machine operator in a complex system, with responsibility for efficient operation of the equipment with minimal downtimes. Normally a Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant would carry out their work at plant assembly sites, workshops or in connections with service operations which utilize complex mechatronic systems. 

 

Educational content: electrical components, mechanical components and electrical drives, (electro) pneumatic and hydraulic control circuits and digital fundamentals and PLCs.

Focus on systems management, investigation, troubleshooting and repair

A Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Associate will function as a highly skilled technician who can work with modules and components in complex mechatronic systems as well as be able to assess and analyze the system as a whole. A certified Associate can manage, investigate, repair and troubleshoot mechatronic systems, with the aim of operational efficiency and cost and process control. They would usually carry out their work at production facilities, workshops, or in service sites that use complex mechatronic systems. 

 

Educational content: process control technologies, introduction to Totally Integrated Automation (TIA), automation systems, motor control, mechanics and machine elements, manufacturing processes.

Emphasis on professional system engineering, systems design and process optimization

A Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Professional will function as a skilled designer of, and expert on, complex mechatronic systems. A Certified Professional will be able to apply selected project and system engineering practices, such as requirements engineering, project management, process management, quality assurance and management in a project, with the goal to design or improve a mechatronic system upon customer and user needs. Certified Professionals usually start their career as a team member of a project team that is responsible for the design, management and improvement of complex mechatronic systems.

Becoming a partner school

Prerequisites for partner schools

To become a partner school, you need to have successful instructor certifications for at least two faculties. SMSCP partner schools must have a modularized mechatronic training system on site. This system must meet certain requirements and feature a number of specific components. An implementation plan to integrate SMSCP content into the chosen program and an agreement with the local Siemens subsidiary are required, too. 

Content for certified SMSCP instructors

Instructors can take different courses to get certified for SMSCP levels 1 to 3. Each level comprises ten days of training. Learn more about the training content and where the courses are available.

Upcoming training courses

Certification in two steps

To become a certified instructor, you will first attend a systems approach paradigm week, a one-week course that introduces the methods that make up our special didactic model.

 

For the level you want to be certified in, you will also need to engage in a one to two-week course for the specific content for each level. Completion of the level 1 course is a requisite plus you have to attend level 2 and level 3 courses. Once you have completed these two steps and have a connection with an SMSCP partner school, you’re certified to start teaching SMSCP related courses.
