With the European eco-compatible design standard EN 50598, the focus is directed away from individual components and toward an overall system approach. Since 2015, EN 50598 has defined the requirements for drive systems in electrically driven production machines. This means that all products that convert an appreciable amount of electrical power must be evaluated in terms of their level of efficiency or loss. The second part of EN 50589-2 is especially relevant for evaluating energy efficiency. It indicates how the manufacturer is to determine the losses of drive and motor systems. This in turn allows users to compare products in terms of their energy efficiency.

It pays to invest
In order to make it easier for companies to invest in energy-efficient processes, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy has refocused its financial support programs in the field of energy efficiency. The investment program entitled “Energy Efficiency and Process Heat from Renewable Energies in Industry – Subsidies and Loans” standardizes the previous financial support options.The objective: to reduce primary energy consumption by 50% of 2008 figures by 2050.
In addition to the expansion of new electricity-generating capacities based on renewable energies, the energy revolution focuses on reducing energy consumption by increasing energy efficiency. To this end, the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy has published new financing guidelines with the intention of simplifying the existing financial support models. Instead of dividing the units to be subsidized into different programs with different requirements, as was previously the case, the investment program for energy efficiency and process heat from renewable energies in industry separates the subsidy options into four modules: general-purpose technologies; process heat from renewable energies; instrumentation and control, sensor technology, and energy management software; and energy-related optimization of plants and processes. Financial support can be applied for in the form of a subsidy or loan. One prerequisite, however, is that companies have ISO 50001 or equivalent certification, or that the appropriate certification process has been started.
