Connecting an all-electric world

Decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization are the three key drivers of change in the world. A growing demand of decarbonization leads to the increasing use of renewable energy sources and distributed grids that must be managed by digital solutions. Within the drivers of change, digitalization is the key enabler to create additional value for our customers. Along electrification, automation and digitalization we enable customized solutions for an optimized mix of conventional and renewable energy sources with intelligent power grids and storage systems. We help our customers to respond to a growing demand of renewable energy sources enabling a decentralized, reliable and sustainable grid and supporting the creation of new business models and revenue streams. This makes our customers to remain profitable, be more independent and agile. Find out more in Madrid. We are looking forward to meeting you there!
Topic highlights

How to meet the challenges of 3D power grids

Future Distribution Substation

The Future Distribution Substation, with integrated IoT connection, is our solution for preparing your distribution grid for the challenges of the transition to a new energy mix. The smart secondary substation enables you to effectively monitor and control your distribution grids.

Our innovative “blue” products help you protect the climate. The newly launched 8DJH 12 – blue GIS switchgear uses no F-gases or chemical additives, having a minimal global warming potential of <1 and at the same time offering well known advantages of gas-insulated switchgears from Siemens.

Medium- and low-voltage power grids need to handle changes due to the increasing integration of distributed infeed of renewable energy and growing electromobility in private transportation (grid edge). While more and more of the necessary connection capacity can be provided through grid expansion, the effects of changing energy flow direction, load fluctuations, and voltage range compliance can only be managed with intelligent solutions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) allows all components in energy automation systems to supply data for consolidation, visualization, and evaluation in a cloud-based operating system such as MindSphere. Full data transparency unlocks the potential of the power grid in order to increase reliability, optimize efficiency and enhance grid safety.

Think digital – Smart transition of energy systems

In the ongoing global energy transition, distribution grid operators face manifold battlefields: renewable integration, intelligent grids and consumer/prosumer centric business models. Our combined solutions for electrification, automation and digitalization enable our customers to create multilayered, decentralized and connected grids, adapting agile to upcoming new business models.

Bringing these concepts to life, Siemens shows smart transition ways into the Internet of Energy – Powered by MindSphere, from Distribution Network Planning and Analysis, Electrical Digital Twins and Future Substations to Grid Diagnostics and Advanced Distribution Management. Digitalization supports new approaches like simulation and agile co-creation of applications as well.

IoT integration – How can IoT deliver real business impact?

The three Siemens key drivers of change “Decarbonization, Decentralization and Digitalization” have been complemented by IDC’s 3 Rs “Relevance, Resilience and Risk”, that characterize specifically utilities’ transformation challenges for a successful IoT integration journey.

OMNETRIC (a Siemens company) supports IDC’s 3 Rs with 3 Is “IoT, IT/OT and Insights” to capitalize on current industry developments in digitalization and to realize business impact.

Even though every IoT journey is unique, successfully leveraging the IoT for one’s own business implies five subsequent phases, covering everything from use case ideation to development and operations. To make it a successful and sustainable implementation, cybersecurity and change management must be prioritized right from the start and integrated into all phases.

Utilities typically face a multitude of challenges regarding IoT adoption. Our utility applications on MindSphere, Siemens’ open Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), help energy providers to discover and exploit data intelligence to capitalize on industry change and realize new business models. Solutions providing an integrated view of data, systems and operations can be delivered in real time.

Let your assets talk

Siemens’ digital services bring services offerings to the next level and make it possible to become a strategic partner for our customers. The most essential objective here is the mitigation of risks, early fault diagnostics and avoidance of outages. The brand-new solutions for Online Monitoring are the SITRAM TDCM and SITRAM CAM. The combination of the transformer online monitor and the fleet monitoring solution generate executable and prioritized transformer service action proposals.

Digitalization facilitates the identification of risks and the impact on lifecycle costs and makes risk reduction targets and mitigation measures possible.
