The Power of Intellect to Power the CitiesIt is difficult to imagine a life without electricity. Electricity accompanies us from the start until the end of the day: in the morning we turn on the kettle and cook breakfast, and in the evening we turn on the light that fills our homes with warmth and cosiness. To give you the confidence that the light will shine when you turn it on, the power grid has to be operational uninterruptedly. In modern cities this is ensured by Smart Grids. Siemens Smart Grid technologies implemented in Ufa help ensure reliable power supply and the detection and elimination of failures within minutes.
Ufa was the first Russian city to adopt Smart Grids. Since 2013, Siemens has been implementing the power grid modernization project in Bashkortostan's capital together with OJSC BESK. As a result of the project, within the next few years the city will fully switch over to Smart Grid control. The task is to update 512 monitored and 157 controlled transformer stations and to lay 350 km of cable lines.
The first project stage covered the Zelenaya Roshcha residential district with 25,000 residents. Besides that, the new Grid Control Centre that collects all information from the sites was inaugurated. The Centre houses not only the dispatchers but also the services and servers that support their work, as well as training classrooms. The Grid Control Centre is connected to the city's eight dispatcher points and ensures full monitoring of grid equipment load and operation.
Smart Grid is not merely a technology, but rather a whole philosophy revolving around receiving and processing information. In case of an emergency there is an exchange of signals between the devices, right after which the dispatcher at the Control Centre is informed about the location of the damage via an electronic diagram. The program itself suggests the means of bypassing the failed section. Within two minutes of the breakage, district power supply is restored.
Besides the grid itself, the dispatchers also monitor the maintenance teams that go directly to the power sites when necessary. They're helped by GLONASS modules installed in each car. This approach allows for automatic calculation of costs in order to control the operational and technical budgets.
In order to enhance the quality of the power supply, reduce costs and power losses, Siemens has used various technologies and solutions in implementing the Ufa project: grid condition monitoring devices (allowing for the detection of short circuits and their direction, as well the monitoring of main electric parameters); protection relays and automation devices from the SIPROTEC Compact series (ensuring the protection, automation and management of switchgears); SICAM TM controllers (collecting information on the positions of keys, switches and the triggering of protection system, and also transmitting control commands).
Retrofitting the power grid also involves the usage of high-technology equipment, the assembly of which has been already localized in the region. It includes the medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear with SF6 insulation installed at the switchgear and transformer substations. This equipment is intended for remote control as well as the transmission of telemetric data and remote signals from substations to the control centre.
Smart Grid elements also help detect unsanctioned connections. Differences in meter readings make it easy to determine the location of such connections in order to take immediate action. In late 2014 the total rate of power lost in Ufa was about 16–17%. Upon the project's completion in 2020, this value will be reduced by half.
Previously, restoring the power supply circuitry took almost 2.5 hours. Now within only two minutes the district power supply is already restored.Dmitry Sharovatov, Director General of OJSC BESK
Smart Grid in UfaUfa is the very first Russian city where smart grid technologies are being implemented. Since 2013, Siemens and BESK have been running a joint project dedicated to the modernization of Bashkortostan’s capital’s power grid.
