System Integrity for Process Automation
The top priority in process automation is to maintain control over production and process. Measures aimed at preventing the spread of a security threat must not affect this either. Our process control systems offer an integrated, comprehensive safety solution tailored to the special requirements of process plants. The safety concept effectively increases protection, reduces risks, helps to avoid safety-related incidents and thus increases plant availability.Siemens offers a coordinated portfolio of solutions specifically for securing industrial plants. Industrial Security ensures the safe operation of plants, systems, machines and networks. In order to secure plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is necessary to implement (and continuously maintain) a holistic industrial security concept that corresponds to the current state of the art. For this purpose, we use a depth staggered defense – "Defense in Depth" – as a comprehensive protection concept, according to the recommendations of ISA99 / IEC 62443, the leading standard for security in industrial automation.
The security concept of our control systems is also based on the staggered security architecture (Defense in Depth). It is not limited to the use of individual security procedures (e.g. hierarchical gradation of access rights, authentication and encryption) or security devices such as firewalls. Rather, its strength lies in the fact that individual security measures are combined and interact in the plant network. Plants are composed of closed security cells, which together ultimately result in a closed system according to the definition of ISA99 for security in process control systems.
