The Conference of Electric Power Supply Industry Conference (CEPSI) is one of the most prestigious events of the East Asian and Western Pacific regions’ power industry, occurring once every 2 years and the largest energy and electricity supply industry conference ever to be organized in Malaysia. Returning to Malaysia after 22 years, Siemens Malaysia took the opportunity to become the Diamond Sponsor, in support of event organizer and our close partner, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
The highly acclaimed regional event took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from 18 – 20 September, and the Siemens booth was in prime position as it was the first thing delegates and other attendees laid their eyes on. The exhibition space looked like something right out of a sci-fi film, decked with actors in futuristic clothing - drawing in onlookers with handouts. Some of the technologies and solutions available at our booth include the Siemens Remote on-site Service (SiROS), Grid Diagnostics Suite & Substation Device Management, and IoT Connectivity among others, which were manned by our very own Siemens colleagues from around the region.
CEPSI 2018 was officiated by the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC), YB Yeo Bee Yin, on the first day of the conference. The Siemens booth was honored to have her try out some of the cutting-edge technologies which the Minister took a keen interest to, especially the SiROS tech and our VR tour of the HL-Class gas turbines. It’s definitely not the Siemens way to let our guests leave empty handed, so we flew Buddy Bear all the way from Berlin, which our President & CEO, Indranil Lahiri presented to the Minister as a token, after showing her around the booth.
YB Yeo Bee Yin was impressed by Siemens solutions.
Apart from the Energy Minister, CEPSI 2018 also welcomed Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who addressed the conference participants with so much flair and wit. Neil (Indranil Lahiri) and a few from the Siemens Management Team took the opportunity to exchange handshakes with Tun himself as he was making his way out of the venue after his address.
Hon. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, current Prime Minister of Malaysia, was also Prime Minister when Malaysia first hosted CEPSI in 1996.
Neil also had a share of the main spotlight at the conference as he delivered an inspiring presentation on Global Trends and Big Shift in Electricity & Energy during the main Keynote Session at the Plenary Hall of KLCC. During the Keynote Session, Neil shared the same stage with some of the biggest names in the industry, which includes Dr Jonathan Woetzel, Senior Partner, McKinsey & Company, as well as Lara Olsen, Head of Business Development & Growth, Tesla Energy.
The 3-day conference covered a wide range of topics in tandem with the theme of the event, “Reimagining Utility of the Future”, during its technical paper presentation sessions. Several of these sessions were held concurrently at different halls of the venue which participants could choose from according to preference. Siemens roped in its topic experts from all over the world, to speak on energy transformation, renewable energy in power system, short circuit current limiters, HL-Class gas turbines, optimizing plant operation, seafloat power plants, microgrid designs, and many more.
In addition to presenting technical papers, Siemens colleagues also presented product pitches at the Futures Arena.
CEPSI has a reputation of drawing massive attention in the industry beyond just Asia, which meant even Siemens customers and partners traveled from far and wide to participate in the conference. At the end of the second day of CEPSI 2018, Siemens Malaysia hosted these key stakeholders in a very special event at The Diplomat KL called, “A Thousand Splendid Lights with Siemens: Envisioning the Future… with You”. Guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet and a one-of-a-kind futuristic projection mapping spectacle, followed by a live band performance. The laid back manner in which the event was held presented a great opportunity for our key stakeholders to mingle and discuss the possibilities of more meaningful collaboration in the near future.
On the last day of the conference, during the closing ceremony, Siemens was awarded “Best Interactive Booth” for displaying state-of-the-art futuristic technology. On behalf of the organization, Steve Loo, Country Division Lead, Energy Management, Lead Country Singapore, Siemens Malaysia also received an award from TNB as a token of appreciation for our support as the Diamond Sponsor for CEPSI 2018.
All in all, it was a huge success, with over 4,000 delegates in attendance and media coverage focusing on Siemens specifically - several interviews which featured Neil and even other colleagues who made the evening news! For an event that comes by once every other decade, we sure made it a memorable one.
For those who missed all the action, here’s a tour of the Siemens booth by our President & CEO, Indranil Lahiri:
