The Runtime Software products at a glance
WinCC in the TIA Portal is the software for all HMI applications ranging from the simplest operation solutions with Basic Panels to SCADA applications on PC-based multi-user systems. With SIMATIC HMI operator devices, the runtime software is on-board. For PC platforms, SIMATIC WinCC Runtime Advanced and SIMATIC WinCC Runtime Professional are available as independent products.
The integrated runtime modules of Basic and Comfort Panels
With SIMATIC HMI operator devices, the runtime software gives you different HMI functionality and performance profiles depending on the equipments hardware.
Industry-standard HMI functions are part of the basic equipment of the system:
- Operating the machine or plant via an individually configurable operator interface, e.g. with buttons, switches, and sliders
- Visualization of the process sequences and statuses with dynamizable graphics, bar graphs, and gauges
- Reporting and acknowledging of events

The Runtime modules of the SIMATIC HMI operator devices offer HMI-functionality according to the classes of the panels.
Basic Panels offer basic functionality and limited quantity frameworks for most of the functions, while Comfort Panels as well as Mobile Panels support an advanced range of functions and extended quantity frameworks
- Input/output fields for displaying and modifying process parameters
- Buttons are used for direct triggering of functions and actions. Up to 16 functions can be configured simultaneously on buttons.
- Graphics can be used as icons instead of text to "label" function keys or buttons. They can also be used as full-screen background images.

The range of functions of WinCC Runtime Advanced includes the centralized HMI components for visualizing and reporting, and it can be expanded to suit requirements and costs by using optional packages.

SIMATIC WinCC Runtime Advanced is available as a software package with a defined maximum of PowerTags. The term PowerTags is used to identify process variables and area pointers that have a process link to the controller.
Variables without process link, constant limit values of variables, and messages (up to 4 000 bit-triggered messages) are also available for additional system performance.
Powerpacks to increase the number of tags or upgrade to WinCC RT Professional are available to provide scalability of the basic package.
