Safe, space-saving control of assembly conveyors

More functionality in the smallest of spaces with SIRIUS motor starters. When it comes to employee safety at assembly stations, assembly conveyors must satisfy very strict requirements. If the system also has to remain flexible at the same time, compact, safe motor starter solutions are what is required so that enough space is left in the control panel for future modifications and expansions.

SIRIUS 3RM1 fail-safe motor starter in use at Sächsisch-Bayerische Starkstrom Gerätebau GmbH

Sächsisch-Bayerische Starkstrom Gerätebau GmbH (SBG) has been producing oil distribution transformers for over 70 years. The high order volume and changes in customer requirements left the company no choice but to construct a new production line. As some of the new assembly conveyors had an open design, safety systems played a major role in the company's planning, which is why they opted for the SIRIUS 3RM1 motor starter solution. The narrow width of just 22.5 mm not only left enough space for future expansions in the control panel, but also reduced the amount of wiring work by more than half.
Thanks to the combination of switching, protection and safety functions in the constricted available space for the control panels, this solution turned out to be idea.

More than 50% space-saving with SIRIUS 3RM1 with SIL3 or Perfomance Level e

Measuring 22.5 mm in width, the devices unite contactor and overload relay functionality in an extremely narrow enclosure. They are optionally available as direct-on-line or reversing starters and they switch three-phase asynchronous motors with outputs of up to 3 kW. In the safety variant, they are suitable for safety-related disconnection up to safety integrity level SIL3 or Performance Level e in compliance with DIN EN ISO 13849. The amount of space and wiring work required can also be reduced for their control circuit because the motor starters are supplied with 24 V control voltage via the backplane bus of the device connectors. As a result, a complete group of motors can be disconnected from the control voltage in the event of an emergency stop. This kind of disconnection is technically identical with single disconnection of one fail-safe output in the F-control of each motor starter but saves considerably more costs because these outputs can be dispensed with. The wide setting range of up to 3 kW reduces the number of different versions in the control panel, thus freeing up further potential savings in warehousing.
