Founded in 1971, we’re the oldest Siemens factory in the UK. But that doesn’t mean that we’re old-fashioned. We have the highest productivity rate per square metre of any Siemens site in the UK.
Our culture, our focus, is on continuous improvement. We’re competing in a global marketplace and always aim to be doing what others can’t. Being the first, the fastest, the leanest, is essential.
Our commitment leads to extraordinary results. In the early 1990s, we developed and manufactured the first variable speed drive. Our workers made 50,000 units a year. Today, we make over a million units, with the same number of employees.
We will also reach carbon net zero in 2022, eight years ahead of our target.

At our Congleton office we're dedicated to ensuring we're being as sustainable as possible. Some of the ways that we've implemented this is through:
- Zero waste to landfill achieved October 2011
- Double glazed windows to reduce heat loss installed in the Main office block and factory throughout 2018
- Havannah Weir Hydro Project started providing renewable electricity direct to site in July 2021
- Omniflow lights, powered by solar and wind, installed in the main car park November 2021
- Electric Vehicle chargers points installed and commissioned in December 2021
Sustainability is at the very heart of how we implement and measure productivity. The two are interlinked, it’s all about: “doing more, efficiently with limited resources”. Developing new sources of sustainable energy is a way to reduce our reliance on carbon and guarantee our power supply, safeguarding production from brownouts or blackouts.
We partnered with our Energy and Performance Services team to help us preserve productivity, boost our energy resilience and simultaneously reduce our overall reliance on carbon.
Sustainability is integral to that culture. We don’t see it as a ceiling; it’s a goal that we keep working towards. We want to be getting better every year. Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges we face today. As part of Siemens, we have taken the lead and put sustainability at the core of everything that we do.
We generate our own energy through a local hydro-electric plant, run by Dane Valley Community Energy, at Havannah Weir on the river Dane. We power our on-site gas engine on carbon neutral, certified biogas from two British farms. As a result of this, Congleton is now 80% energy independent. This helps us to keep the lights on and stay resilient to blackouts and brownouts.
Thanks to our on-site and renewable energy generation, we’re educating local children about the importance of minimising energy wastage. We believe in playing an integral role in our local community.
Every year, we run the Siemens roller-coaster building challenge for primary schools in our area. We also work with colleges in the region to support specialist training. In the last year, more than 350 students took our factory tour. Visiting students see our hardware and software working in practice and meet the teams working at our site. From careers fairs to work experience, we’re passionate about engaging young people in STEM.
Almost a quarter of our workforce actively volunteer and we partner with organisations doing good locally, nationally and internationally. At the heart of what we do is a commitment to our community – building a site that supports Congleton’s manufacturing heritage and drives sustainability for a better future for us all. We transform the everyday, to create a better tomorrow.

SINAMICS G115D – the new distributed drive system
The new SINAMICS G115D is a powerful drive system that has been specifically designed to address current and future challenges involving horizontal conveyor applications. Typical applications include intralogistics and airports. These markets face challenges such as the volume of demands and parcel shipments, and in environments where space is at a premium. This means that a higher volume must be handled in a shorter time. SINAMICS G115D is the optimum device when addressing all of these requirements as it operates reliably under harsh conditions and takes up little space. It combines a motor, frequency converter and gearbox in one single unit. This all-in-one solution means that it can be easily integrated into existing automation environments.
The converter for all water and air applications
The SINAMICS G120X converter is optimized for pump and fan applications in the water/wastewater industry as well as HVAC applications in building automation. This makes SINAMICS G120X the first choice for users who want to tap on the power of the elements to improve the quality of people’s lives. Part of a complete and seamless family of products, the frequency converter meets practically every requirement.
