Can plants be protected by firewalls, and where are they best deployed?
Firewalls are among the most well-known security measures and are usually used at the boundaries of security cells and at zone transitions to regulate access from and to individual cells. Bear in mind that a site can consist of multiple security zones, such as the administration, operational management and other process control networks, which should be separated from each other.
Hence, firewalls are available in a wide range of configurations and packaging – including as standalone software, dedicated hardware or sometimes even as part of the operating system. To meet their intended purpose, all firewalls must be configured in accordance with the permissible communication.
