Siemens expands ratings of arc-resistant SIMOVAC™ medium-voltage controller, improving safety and operation of critical electrical infrastructure technology

Wendell, NC | Feb 14, 2013

  • New 63 kA-rated SIMOVAC-AR™ controller rated for both short-circuit and internal arc-fault operations making it one of the industry’s most advanced medium-voltage controllers

  • Better protects operators and personnel against potentially dangerous arc-flash events

  • Extended ratings allow for most cost-effective and compact lineup of SIMOVAC-AR controllers and GM-SG-AR switchgear

Siemens has added the extended 63kA rating to SIMOVAC-AR™, the industry’s first medium-voltage controller fully rated for 63 kA applications. The system features technology that provides greater safety and protection for personnel against arc-flash events, the rapid release of energy that can occur in electrical systems and potentially harm personnel. The technology has been designed to be compact, allowing for significant space reduction in a power equipment center or electrical room.

“We understand that safety is paramount when operating electrical equipment and that is why we’ve designed the industry’s most advanced medium-voltage controller with a rating up to 63 kA and available in arc-resistant construction,” said Brian Dula, vice president of Siemens Medium Voltage & Systems. “Our technology will save space and reduce operating costs, but, most importantly, will protect against dangerous arc-flash events and keep electrical operators safe.”

The 63 kA SIMOVAC-AR controllers are fully rated for both short-circuit withstand and internal arc resistance, making the technology one of the most advanced and high-performing medium-voltage controllers in the industry. The technology has been tested for arc-resistance to IEEE standards and is available with UL or cUL listings. The SIMOVAC-AR also offers generous low-voltage compartment space to accommodate wiring for complex control schemes. Users can finally have maximum protection and performance in a close-coupled lineup of medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear and controllers, arc-resistant or non-resistant rated up to 63 kA.
