Siemens Mobility to provide Calgary Transit with 15 S200 light rail vehicles

Sacramento, February 25, 2020
  • New vehicles support ongoing fleet update efforts and latest expansion
  • Continues almost 40 year partnership with Calgary Transit, helping improve passenger experience

Siemens Mobility will continue to update Calgary’s current light rail vehicle fleet with 15 more S200 light rail vehicles.  These vehicles will replace Siemens’ original U2 vehicles, most of which have been running for almost 40 years.

"These U2 cars have been reliable workhorses that have more than exceeded their expected lifetime and we’re proud at how we’ve been able to  update and replace them with our S200s,” said Michael Cahill, president of Rolling Stock for Siemens Mobility, North America.  “It’s an honour to be the long-standing partner of choice for one of the largest light rail systems in North America.”

This long-standing partnership has resulted in custom designed vehicles for Calgary’s unique operating environment. The new cars will continue to feature the unique Calgary ”Mask” look, which was inspired by a hockey goalie mask, and chosen by popular vote.

Siemens Mobility has delivered over 260 vehicles for Calgary's light rail system which have kept the city moving for almost four decades.   The new vehicles will be built at Siemens Mobility’s Sacramento facility, which is up to 80% powered by solar energy.

Siemens Mobility has been providing solutions to the Canadian transportation industry for more than 40 years, including light rail vehicles in Edmonton and Calgary, trainsets that will be delivered to Via Rail starting in 2021, and the rail electrification of the light rail systems in Kitchener-Waterloo and Ottawa’s Confederation Line.
