California is home to seven of the ten most ozone-polluted cities in the United States. This critical air quality problem presents a need for large-scale action.
Today is California Clean Air Day–and as a company, Siemens Mobility supports this initiative by signing the 2020 Clean Air Pledge. California is a very important state for us: not only do we have thousands of employees who live and work there, but we also support millions of passengers who ride our vehicles across the state.
California Clean Air Day and the Clean Air Pledge encourage individuals and organizations to take actionable steps to improve sustainability in their communities. The initiative highlights the small changes individuals can make in their daily lives—like walking/biking to the store instead of driving or eating less meat—to improve local air quality. It also shows how coming together in support of such a cause can have a positive long-term environmental impact.
Siemens Mobility’s support for California Clean Air Day aligns with our business’s overall focus on sustainability. We are deeply committed to offering sustainable transportation solutions for our customers and working to make our organization the most sustainable it can be.
Our Siemens Charger locomotive is one of our prominent sustainable transportation solutions. We are happy to announce that this locomotive has recently been awarded the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 4 Emissions Verification for meeting the low emissions criteria in California. With this certification, the Siemens Charger becomes one of only two CARB-verified Tier-4 emissions passenger locomotives technologies in the industry. Coupled with its existing EPA Tier 4 certification, this makes Siemens Chargers one of the cleanest diesel-electric locomotives in the marketplace today.
On top of this recent innovation, Siemens Mobility has several long-term sustainability goals. Our business has pledged to contribute to the UN’s 17 Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. In California, our Sacramento rail manufacturing facility is powered by a 2MW solar installation.
With these larger goals in mind, involvement in California Clean Air Day is an important step in the process of creating a more sustainable world. Although this initiative is organized for California specifically, it is important for us to realize the key role that we all play in protecting our environment. The recent wildfires are just one reminder that we collectively need to do our part to help lessen the environmental impact that our businesses have, and that we impose as individuals.
That said, please consider further supporting this company-backed initiative by taking the individual Clean Air Pledge through this link. Taking the Pledge is a quick and easy way to get our families–and our planet’s next generation–involved and aware of the important impact that we can have on our environment.
