Investing in the Future
Siemens Launches Next47
Next47 is an independent, global venture firm backed by Siemens that invests in the world’s most forward-thinking entrepreneurs to fuel the industries of tomorrow.
Next47 works with startups that are using deep and frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, cybersecurity, autonomous driving, IoT, robotics, and advanced manufacturing to solve the most difficult and fundamental industry challenges.
The first project of its kind in the country, Siemens black-start technology enables Trans Bay Cable to restore electricity to the San Francisco Peninsula after a severe network event.
In an emergency, the technology allows up to 300 megawatts (MW) of power to feed into the city through Trans Bay Cable while the network is being restored. The black-start capability, which doesn’t require the local network to be running, powers critical facilities like hospitals and fire stations.

R&D at UC Berkeley
University of California, Berkeley
In partnership with UC Berkeley, Siemens researchers are focusing on how robots can harness the power of the cloud to learn specialized tasks. UC Berkeley also participated in Siemens FutureMakers Challenge, an R&D challenge designed to foster innovation and develop the next generation of the digital engineering workforce.
Built by Siemens in nearby Sacramento, California, the trains are replacing and expanding the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SMFTA) light rail fleet over the next several years and will provide decades of service in the Muni Metro system.
Siemens recently acquired Enlighted Inc., a leading provider of smart IoT (Internet of Things) systems in buildings, and Building Robotics Inc., best known for its core product, Comfy, a market leader in the app domain to enhance the digital workplace experience.
