The Bay’s Critical Backup

Emergency Power for San Francisco

The first project of its kind in the country, Siemens black-start technology enables Trans Bay Cable to restore electricity to the San Francisco Peninsula after a severe network event.

In an emergency, the technology allows up to 300 megawatts (MW) of power to feed into the city through Trans Bay Cable while the network is being restored. The black-start capability, which doesn’t require the local network to be running, powers critical facilities like hospitals and fire stations.
