With an energy management system adapted to the application, you can effectively even out the power requirements of a press. Servo presses without energy management have no buffer for the kinetic energy in the system, which is why the power they draw from the grid is characterized by large differences between the average value and rms value. Installing a “full-size” energy management system makes it possible to utilize the numerous technological advantages of servo presses under the most cost-effective conditions. Ever since Siemens equipped the first servo presses back in 2008, press manufacturers and press operators have been actively engaged in the topic of energy management: Is energy management for servo presses necessary or helpful?

Power peak compensation

In addition to dynamic energy management, energy storage makes it possible to reduce energy costs by avoiding expensive power peaks. An energy buffer compensates for high but short power peaks in the overall cycle; this can significantly reduce the total power infeed for the machine. 


The investment for the energy storage required to compensate for power peaks is more than offset by the overall lower energy infeed and the more consistent energy consumption of the machine. 


Thanks to the scalability of the energy storage, the concept, which is currently implemented primarily in hydraulic presses and hydroforming equipment, can also be used for other technologies that have a short power peak in a cycle of generally low power requirements.
