SINAMICS DC-DC power converters for industrial applications

In industry, the focus is on maximum productivity, energy efficiency, and component reliability In addition, the reduction of CO2 greenhouse gases is a constant challenge. This requires a tailor-made solution for each specific task. Power grids are becoming increasingly volatile as more and more renewable energy sources feed power into them. This can also have an impact on the stability of industrial networks. DC-DC Converters make it possible to integrate storage systems into the drive line-up. So, for example, regenerative energy can be stored temporarily and then used for the process as required. The stored energy can also be supplied to the drive line-up in the event of peak load requirements or power failures. Siemens offers DC-DC Converters from the SINAMICS product family for these different applications.

Introducing the SINAMICS DCP 250kW
The Compact DC-DC Converter SINAMICS DCP 250 kW is available now.
This means that a total of three Compact DC-DC Converters are available for connecting batteries or ultracaps to an industrial drive train.
The SINAMICS DCP 250 kW delivers a constant current from 250A to 1000 VDC and the continuous operating range goes from 0...1200 VDC.
Compact DC-DC power converters
With SINAMICS DCP Siemens starts a new generation bidirectional DC/DC converter. Siemens combines its expertise in DC technology with the advantages of the proven SINAMICS family. Thus it sets standards when it comes to quality, reliability and technical functionality..SINAMICS DCP, a scalable DC-DC Power Converter suited for both industrial and smart grid applications, is a combined buck / boost converter in one device. Overlapping voltage ranges at the input and output are possible by means of 4Q operation. This means that the DC output voltage can be lower or higher than the DC input voltage and for variable voltage levels, current can flow in both directions making SINAMICS DCP the ideal solution for charging and discharging batteries and supercapacitors.. Given its high switching frequency, SINAMICS DCP is very compact and lightweight.
Â
Ready-to-go equipment
The SINAMICS DCP is a Compact DC-DC Converter that is ready for immediate use without the need for additional engineering. A power extension can also be easily implemented by connecting several SINAMICS DCPs in parallel.
Â
Bringing both worlds together
As a buck and boost converter, the SINAMICS DCP is capable of connecting two different DC voltage systems at different voltage levels for easy energy exchange. As a result, fewer components are required and installation space is saved.
The high efficiency of SINAMICS DCP maximizes the overall energy fed into the public grid, island grid, microgrid or the internal power system of a factory when it is used to interconnect DC energy sources (e.g. photovoltaics, fuel cells) and energy storage systems (e.g. rechargeable batteries, SuperCaps) to the common DC bus of a grid converter/infeed inverter such as a SINAMICS S120 Active Line Module.
Â
A PROFIBUS communication interface is included as standard. The communications interfaces of the Advanced CUD can be supplemented using additional modules - such as the optional CBE20 for PROFINET or EtherNet/IP™.
Â
The BOP20 basic operator panel is available for simple commissioning and local operator control.
Â
STARTER software is used for the parameter assignment and diagnostics.

Four-quadrant considerations
Definition
- A 4Q converter can be applied as a boost or buck converter
- The DC output voltage can be lower or higher than the DC input voltage, i.e. charge and discharge a battery
- P1, N1 (DC Bus – Input) and P2, N2 (Battery – Output) refer to the input and output terminals of the converter
Â
Overlapping voltage ranges at the input and output are possible by means of 4Q operation
Â
The main application of SINAMICS DCP is to control the electrical power flow between two DC systems:
From a DC bus (input side 1, terminals P1 & N1) to a stationary battery (output side 2, terminals P2 & N2).Â
This is called motoring operation and means positive currentFrom a battery (output side 2, terminals P2 & N2) back to the DC bus (input side 1, terminals P1 & N1).Â
This is called generating operation and means negative current
The power flow in both directions (from the DC bus to the battery and from the battery to the DC bus) is called bidirectional.
Â
The voltages in the two DC circuits are independent of one another.
The electrical power flow, controlled by a signed (+ or -) current or power setpoint specification, is possible regardless of the voltages in the two DC circuits (in the nominal range).

Everything from a single source
The Engineered DC-DC power converter is based on the SINAMICS S120 multi-axis platform and can therefore be easily integrated into the SINAMICS S120 drive line-up mechanically, electrically and in terms of software. This generates synergy effects such as a uniform look & feel, the use of existing communication interfaces and a universal design.
Â
Drawing on abundant resources
The Motor Module for the Engineered DC-DC converter can be selected from the finely gauged power range of the SINAMICS S120 platform. This allows for power requirements up to the megawatt range as well as different cooling methods. Motor Modules with air and liquid cooling are available. The Engineered DC-DC converter can also be deployed in harsh environmental conditions.
Â
Perfectly adaptable
Selecting the right Motor Module and the associated components, such as the output filter, helps to optimize the Engineered DC-DC Converter for the specific application. The flexibility in terms of power, design and voltage class allows special customer requirements to be satisfied perfectly.
