Whether for machine tools, extruder worms or paper rolls – SIMOTICS slow speed permanent-magnet torque motors represent an advanced solution for driving all rotary axis types. They can be completely integrated in machines, without requiring mechanical transmission elements. This reduces the space required, provides maximum flexibility when integrating the motors, minimizes maintenance costs and maximizes availability. Further, the direct mechanical connection results in an increased dynamic performance and control quality in the overall system and ensures a high torque at the optimum speed with highest precision – resulting in highly productive machines.

1FW3 - the ready-to-apply, hollow-shaft torque motor for high energy-consuming applications

Complete torque motors are permanent magnet AC synchronous motors used as a replacement for hydraulic and conventional electric motors consisting of electric motor and gearbox or belts. They are especially suited for use as direct drives in applications with a torque range of 74 to 5,163 lb-ft (100 to 7,000 Nm) at speeds from 50 to 1,700 rpm. 1FW3 complete torque motors are delivered factory-assembled.

 

The extremely compact, water-cooled SIMOTICS T-1FW3 complete torque motors are flanged to the machine using torque arms specifically developed for the purpose. An optional clamping element makes it easier to couple the rotor to the machine shaft. The pre-installed mounting set includes the torque arm, clamping element and centering sleeve (only for hollow shafts) – making it simple and safe to establish a connection to the motor. This creates a perfectly stiff drive train that can be optimally controlled.

 

The motor is available in IP rating 54 with a high overload capability (up to 2.5 times rated torque) and a wide hollow shaft allowing new innovative machine designs.

1FW6 - the built-in, hollow-shaft torque motor for high dynamic applications

Built-in torque motors are liquid-cooled, self-cooled high-pole permanent excited three-phase synchronous motors with a hollow-shaft rotor. The motors are supplied as built-in components. For a complete drive unit, a bearing and an encoder system are required additionally.

 

For SIMOTICS T-1FW6 built-in torque motors, stator and rotor are supplied as components and are directly integrated in the machine itself. They are available with jacket as well as with integrated cooling. Further, the motors operate without any mechanical transmission elements – e.g. coupling and gearbox – and require significantly less space than conventional motors. The compact design and low number of installed parts reduce the number of interfaces, maintenance costs and stock inventory costs – thus minimizing machine failures.

 

1FW6 is rated IP23 and offers a high overload capability of up to two times rated torque.

Compact, dynamic and rugged

Industrial machining processes involving the application of large forces call for powerful and rugged drive systems. The SIMOTICS T series of heavy-duty motors from Siemens are tough direct drives that meet these requirements and have proven their value, especially in metal forming applications. The existing heavy-duty motor family has been supplemented by the SIMOTICS T-1FW4 heavy-duty motor to allow presses to be built in all sizes.


The powerful, permanent-magnet-excited synchronous motors set themselves apart with their high dynamic response and precision. In addition, the motors have a mechanical design that is especially rugged, enabling them to resist shocks of the order of 10 g without difficulty. 


Heavy-duty torque motors are perfectly suited to track the highly sophisticated dynamic movement profiles of high-level motion control controllers even under harsh operating conditions.

Reduce operating costs / increase availability

The SIMOTICS T-HT-direct series of high-torque motors are permanent-magnet synchronous motors that can provide high torques at low speeds directly at the driven machine. High efficiencies and good power factors can also be achieved at low speeds as a result of the permanent magnet rotors. HT-direct high-motors are offered as a harmonized system together with SINAMICS drives, representing a drive solution with a long service lifetime, yet low lifecycle costs and high efficiency for applications at low operating speeds.

Advantages and options

  • With slow-running drives, the efficiency of the HT-direct series is approximately 2 to 3% higher than for similar drive concepts, if gear or gear steps can be saved. For a 1,350 Hp (1,000 kW) motor, this results in a saving of 33 kW per day

  • High-pole design in combination with permanent magnet technology ensures that the space requirement and mass of the motors are lower than for similar asynchronous machines. The slow-running motors of the HT-direct series obviate the need for a gearbox in many cases – resulting in reduction in engineering, assembly and maintenance outlay, lower investment and lower operating costs

  • Efficient, optimally matched SINAMICS drive system and HT-direct motor can operate  with or without encoders

  • Thanks to their long service life (nominal bearing lifetime > 60,000 hours), HT-direct high-torque motors are maintenance-free and have a high availability especially for applications in which a gearbox may be omitted

  • Environmentally-friendly system – energy-savings and where applicable, no disposal of gearbox oil is necessary
