Next-generation communications

State-of-the-art, standards-based, point-to-multipoint, wireless radio system for secure, licensed, private, wide-area broadband networks

Siemens’ system of frequency agnostic (software-defined) wireless base stations, fixed and mobile remote radios are based on IEEE 802.16s (the standard for broadband, wireless, fixed/mobile access systems) that enables wide-area, Internet Protocol connectivity. This allows railroads to transition from multiple, single-purpose networks to a common, managed, multi-purpose/multi-band network and realize significant reduction of infrastructure and operating costs.

The new ATCS Base Station radio and the new ATCS Wayside radios are over-the-air compatible with Siemens’ Base Communication Package (BCP) and Wayside Communication Package (WCP) systems.  They can be used as drop-in-replacements to maintain or grow the existing ATCS network.  The new ATCS radios, allow for ATCS and IP-based communications to co-exist on the same network allowing for use cases such as crossing monitoring and remote diagnostics together with transmission of CTC controls and indication.

Ultra-compact, low-cost fixed and mobile remote radio that is an ideal alternative to cell/satellite endpoints

Mercury is a high volume, lower bandwidth, fixed or mobile remote radio.  It is designed for smaller data endpoint needs with low power-budget requirements and a smaller footprint.  The Mercury radio connects to either a Venus or a Mars base station and delivers end-to-end IP connectivity.

Versatile base station, fixed remote or mobile remote radio 

A Venus radio may be programmed either as a base station (Master) or as a fixed/mobile remote.  As a remote radio, the Venus connects to either a Mars or Venus base station to provide end-to-end IP connectivity.  The Venus radio is designed with higher power and processing capability.  It offers segmented edge processing and data storage in an embedded Docker container.

High-performance, high-power base station, fixed remote or mobile remote radio 

Typically configured as a high-power base station in a point-to-multipoint RF network, the Mars radio connects to Mercury, Venus, and Mars remote radios as the system master.
